Genie ThoughtaliniApril 2022 Spooky month begins! Although I enjoy engaging in the festivities, there is also something to be said about the tangible realities of fear, anxiety, suffering and terror we all carry with us day to day. Our world is full of frightening things. It’s easy to get swept away on the waves of terror, especially with the way our media presents information and how quickly it disseminates online. Our brains are programmed to zero in on the negative, to endlessly cycle through unexplained phenomena and assume the worst. There are many reasons to be trapped in fear, whether it be a looming crisis, a past trauma, a clear and present danger—-all these emotional experiences are valid. They cling to our body, layers of horror dust, and distort our focus. We are often so hard on ourselves (or others) for being unable to “just get over it”, but these things are powerful and can potentially lead to harmful consequences if we don’t stay vigilant. We can criticize our inability to move on, but we can also listen to it as a sign that something is in need of our attention and commit to looking for a solution. Finding a way to overcome our fears, whatever the origin, is a path to true freedom in some ways. There are certainly communal paths, but also those within us as individuals. I believe in the power of the mind and positive thought, the power of the community and building resilience—the power of them fusing together to form a gentle beast to soothe us at our worst. I wish you all the best in finding peace and a path beyond your fears, both in the short and long term. Share your cures and gratitude with those around you when you can, love is a healing force against terror. |
